This position obtains appropriate blood samples following laboratory procedures and guidelines by proper and various methods from patient orders on a daily basis. They collect, transport and process these specimens in a timely manner. They follow established guidelines for processing of the specimens to include accessioning, centrifugation, and delivery of specimens to technical areas. They follow all safety and infection control guidelines established by the hospital and the laboratory. They also assist lead team members and supervisor in whatever project or task assigned to facilitate efficient and accurate lab specimen processing. Position Responsibilities: - Determines tube type, volume, and techniques necessary for requested lab test, obtains specimen through the most efficient route, transports specimens to lab, and assists nursing services in blood collection as needed or requested. - Practices error prevention techniques in verifying patient and specimen and patient Identification prior to any phlebotomy procedure. Accountable to any errors that occur as a result of not following policy. -Processes specimens to include accessioning, centrifugation, labeling, and distribution; verifying again patient identification prior to labeling or delivery to technical areas. Pays attention to detail and focuses on specimens by priority or schedule assignment as appropriate, ensuring that critical or stat specimens are handled appropriately and routine work in not delayed unnecessarily. -Reviews and researches uncollected logs and makes proper decisions to resolve outstanding orders with consult with other lab team members as necessary. Communicates any issues with log or other issues as shift changes and at other times as necessary. Passes off beepers per policy. - Communicates effectively with peers, nurses, lab team members and supervisors and others. Education Required: High School Diploma or GED. Education Preferred: Specialty training beyond high school in phlebotomy preferred. Certification in phlebotomy recommended. Special Skills Required: Phlebotomy on the job, by experience or education, both theory and application, Computer/ Clerical skills.
