The primary responsibility of the Managing Director in the Early Stage Practice is to act as a senior evangelist, ambassador, and team leader for SVB in the West Coast market. The ESP team is focused on engaging and building deep and authentic relationships with pre-Series A founders, clients, prospects and partners. Early stage constituencies include law firms, accelerators/incubators, academic institutions and universities, industry groups, industry events, not-for-profits, and early stage investors (emerging managers).

As a member of ESP's leadership team, the MD will be personally active in the market while coaching and empowering a team to serve as startup evangelists in the market.

The MD and the team will source, advocate for, and manage relationships and partnerships with key market groups and constituencies, and be responsible for driving measurable ROI via market share analysis, evangelist team coverage and engagement, and relationship development. The MD will measure and deliver on the regional team's goals associated with relationship banking, the early stage practice, product adoption, revenue and client satisfaction.

The MD will build a strong collaborative practice on the West Coast implementing plans, strategies and processes to drive growth in critical early stage markets. This includes overseeing and evaluating marketing, programming (including events), and content.

This team member will report to the Head of ESP and take a key position managing priority relationships and partnerships in the community in ESP's constituencies. The MD will partner with internal colleagues to coordinate and collaborate on constituent relationships, ensuring a cohesive strategy for engagement.

The MD and the team will develop authentic relationships with the most influential and impactful organizations in the startup ecosystem, resulting in growth of market share and acquisition for SVB of the best companies (i.e. those raising a Series A).

As an influential ambassador for SVB, the MD will be personally active in the market and represent SVB at important industry events and deliver (educational and advisory) content for founders through partners. The MD will share market insights, intel, and recommendations with leadership and the team to further refine SVB's strategy, priorities, partnerships and origination channels.

Key responsibilities

ESP West Coast Leadership
o Contribute to the growth of the national Early Stage Practice as a leader and mentor
o Directly manage critical relationships and partnerships in the Bay Area and LA, as well as other key markets on the West Coast
o Represent SVB in-market at critical locations on the West Coast
o Be a main point of contact for SVB's emerging manager/investor relations team
o Provide insights and trends for extending SVB's Venture Capital Relationship Management (VCRM) community
o Determine and deliver on successful marketing, programming, events, and content to meet our goals in-market
o Represent the 'Voice of the Customer" with critical projects - particularly involving Marketing and R&D - to influence the development of the client journey, value proposition, new product offerings, and brand enhancement
o Suggest new programs/products and ideas that help SVB increase impact
o Partner with internal teams on joint sales and pipeline initiatives

Team Leadership & Operations
o Directly coach, mentor and manage a team of startup evangelists in market to ensure measurable, repeatable outcomes
o Ensure cohesion and strong partnership between West Coast teams
o Collaborate closely with early stage peers and colleagues, in particular Business Management and Analytics, with data, metrics, summary results and reporting that enable the team to track progress towards goals for monthly reporting and quarterly insights docs
o Develop strong internal and team relationships
o Manage expectations and cross-group responsibilities
o Measure outcomes of activities and investments
o Oversee budget for West Coast investments
o Meet client acquisition goals via critical origination channels
o Hold quarterly business reviews to share progress with West Coast practice

Skills and Requirements:
Qualifications

Required startup experience and knowledge base:
o Experience as a business or technical founder of a venture-funded startup or deep involvement as an operator in startup ecosystem for 10+ years
o Active participation in the startup community, including advisory or mentorship roles with entrepreneurs and early-stage companies
o Knowledge of business development, customer acquisition, 'lean' startup methodology, and startup recruitment/talent acquisition best practices
o Knowledge of legal and financial pain points and issues that effect Pre-Series A founders
o Experience in banking or financial services preferred, but a fundamental understanding of regulated industries required


Leadership & Management:
o Strong management, mentoring, and coaching abilities
o Proven management skills of both teams and projects, including a capacity for advocacy, negotiation and consensus-building
o Gravitas, confidence and desire to serve as a senior brand ambassador, e.g., proactively seeking key speaking and writing opportunities at industry platforms and media outlets
o Some P&L accountability experience and ability to measure results
