Network Engineer I
Area and Site: Thornton-CO




To join the Sungard AS Technical Operations Center and perform customer facing support functions for network problems in accordance with the Sungard AS incident management process. This involves monitoring, triaging, and troubleshooting problems in a state of the art MPLS based IP backbone, as well as layer 1-3 problems associated with customer managed services such as routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and DNS. You will be exposed to a broad range of network technologies and diverse customer environments which will allow you to further develop your technical skills.


  • Provide world-class customer support and technical expertise for Sungard AS customer environments
  • Manage network incidents through to service restoration, resolution, and closure. Engage customers, additional internal teams, and external vendors as required
  • Customer and core infrastructure monitoring:
    • Learn alarm management platforms, functions, and terminology
    • Verify validity of alarms and follow troubleshooting procedures as outlined
    • Work with remote locations on verification and resolution of alarms
  • Follow outlined procedures for customer notification and escalation
  • Provide a technical network interface with customers
  • Manage network incidents through to service restoration, resolution, and closure. Engage customers, additional internal teams, and external vendors as required
  • Review network requirements and engineering concerns associated with customer requests such as equipment configuration, and operational impact
  • Perform network configuration changes in response to client issues
  • Perform root cause analysis on network problems
  • Identify chronic problems and take action to identify and resolve the root causes
  • Review logs and performance reports for emerging problems and initiate preventive action
  • Have a base familiarity with the client base and resources being utilized by all Sungard AS internal/external customers
  • Act as a technical training resource and escalation point for peers and other internal teams
  • Maintain technical expertise and required industry certifications and stay current with new and emerging networking technologies


  • Proof of US Citizenship
  • Minimum 1 to 3 years of industry experience in a production support role for a large enterprise or service provider environment
  • Solid operational support experience and technical troubleshooting skills
  • Strong working knowledge of routing protocols including BGP, OSPF, EIGRP and knowledge of Internet concepts and routing architectures
  • Strong working knowledge of spanning tree and layer two switching concepts
  • Extensive working knowledge of Cisco IOS
  • Ability to effectively use diagnostic tools
  • Ability to learn, respond to demands, and show leadership in a fast-paced, highly technical environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and influence change within a team
  • Strong organizational, time management, and service delivery skills
  • Effective written and oral communication skills


  • B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent work-related experience
  • Working knowledge of Juniper Routers and JUNOS software
  • CCNA or JNCIA certification
  • Completion or progress towards higher level certifications such as CCNP or JNCIS
  • Working knowledge of load balancing technologies, firewalls, DNS
